(This is a note from Marcia Norman, President and Founder of Seasons Hospice)
I was recently sharing with a staff member the story of how our logo was created. As I was telling the story, I realized many of you have probably never heard the story behind our logo.
I think that growing up in the 60's influenced me to become an advocate of peace. In my heart, the dove is the ultimate symbol of all that is peaceful. Through my years of working in hospice, I witnessed the heavy burden that is placed on our patients and families as they navigate their way through our healthcare system and all the bureaucracy involved in fighting a terminal illness. As I worked with our Graphic designer and artist to create our logo, I felt it was important to signify the peace we bring to our patients and families as they leave a curative approach to medicine and embark on a more palliative plan of care. The dove seemed a perfect fit with our mission to bring peace to the dying process. The patients and families I've cared for through the years have told me of the incredible burden a hospice team can lift from our patients and families. The branch the dove carries in her beak signifies this burden to me. In the first draft the artist drew a small branch. I asked him to make it larger because, in my experience, the burden we lift is often a very large one. Our graphic designer enclosed our symbol in a simple box in order to visually create a feeling of security. Notice how the wing of our dove reaches beyond the box symbolizing the "out of the box" thinking that goes into the care we provide our patients and families every day.
We have earned the reputation as the "say yes" hospice. We always try to stay on the cutting edge with creative solutions. At Seasons Hospice, we bear in mind that "never" has no place here. Instead, we say, "Together we will find a way."
